Donut Falls

Yesterday, we took a family hike up to Donut Falls.  This hike just kept popping up in all of our hike searches as a must-see so we thought we better check it out!

It was such a perfect morning.  The trailhead is about 9 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon and was a cool 60 degrees.  I kind of felt like a bad mom since the kids were both in shorts without jackets because I did not think about the temperature difference beforehand.  Oops.  But once we got moving it actually felt really great and the sun was shining so it was pretty perfect.

The hike was perfect for our little family.  It's about three miles round trip and Jacob did the whole thing easy-peasy on his own.  He loves running on the trail, touching the plants, looking at bugs, and laughing at the chipmunks.  We love that he loves to be outside.

Once we got to the falls the river was really high and although there wasn't that many people there is hardly any place to stand and so that made things tricky.  Mark and I both would have loved to have bouldered up to the top but it just wasn't possible with the kidlets.  So we decided that I would go back down the trail and have a little snack with the kids while he went up.  Mark actually ended up finding a different trail that led to the top without going up the side of the waterfall.  His pictures turned out pretty cool.  We think it would be a lot of fun to go up in September when the water isn't so high and the leaves are turning.  We will have to go back!

The kiddos and I had a good time sitting on some rocks and watching the birds and chipmunks.  Jacob loved the chipmunks as long as they kept their distance.  But the chipmunks got more and more brave the longer we sat there and seemed rather disappointed that we wouldn't give them any of our snacks!

It was a great morning.  We love having our family together again.  And it was wonderful to be out in this beautiful world that our Heavenly Father has created for us.
