Mark works so hard. I seriously don't know how that boy does it every day. I am so proud of him. I love the example he is of working hard. He is a great husband and father. Love him. He has two tests on Thursday and a quiz on Friday - gross. Last night I was helping him study for a few minutes and he just kept laughing because I was just totally ruining the names of the different drugs and diseases that he was studying. Oh boy...I am very glad that he likes it - because it is over my head and then some!
My life is incredibly simple. I get to play with Jacob all day, every day. He is growing up so fast. I love that little munchkin. I am still working on finishing my class - it feels like it is taking me forever. I am SO close to being done though. I am also working on our wedding scrapbook and am ALMOST done with that. I really like how it has turned out. But, oh my goodness, 12 x 12 sheet protectors are INSANELY priced! Seriously, they are going to cost more then everything else combined! Just needed to vent that for a minute. I feel better now... :)
I know I have mentioned this not too long ago, but I was again reminded this week of how important it is to "enjoy the moment." Maybe this is a sign.
But I was reading this month's Ensign and there was a little article talking about President Uchtdorf's talk from last general conference that I just loved. It mentioned this story from his talk. It's kind of long-ish but I just love it. So I am adding it. Mostly because I have a funny feeling that I will need this reminder more times in my life.
"My wife, Harriet, and I love riding our bicycles. It is wonderful to get out and enjoy the beauties of nature. We have certain routes we like to bike, but we don't pay too much attention to how far we go or how fast we travel in comparison with other riders.
However, occasionally I think we should be a bit more competitive. I even think we could get a better time or ride at a higher speed if only we pushed ourselves a little more. And then sometimes I even make the big mistake of mentioning this idea to my wonderful wife.
Her typical reaction to my suggestions of this nature is always very kind, very clear, and very direct. She smiles and says, "Dieter, it's not a race; it's a journey. Enjoy the moment."
How right she is!
Sometimes in life we become so focused on the finish line that we fail to find joy in the journey. I don't go cycling with my wife because I'm excited about finishing. I go because the experience of being with her is sweet and enjoyable.
Doesn't it seem foolish to spoil sweet and joyful experiences because we are constantly anticipating the moment when they will end?
Do we listen to beautiful music waiting for the final note to fade before we allow ourselves to truly enjoy it? No. We listen and connect to the variations of melody, rhythm, and harmony throughout the composition.
Do we say our prayers with only the "amen" or the end in mind? Of course not. We pray to be close to our Heavenly Father, to receive His Spirit and feel His love.
We shouldn't wait to be happy until we reach some future point, only to discover that happiness was already available - all the time! Life is not meant to be appreciated only in retrospect. "This is the day which the Lord hath made..." the Psalmist wrote. "Rejoice and be glad in it." [Psalm 118:24.]"
I love this. I think it is such a great reminder. I have such a blessed life. And I know that I will someday look back on these moments in our life - right now - and it will bring a smile to my face. So instead of waiting until that moment to smile, I am making the choice to smile about it now.
